[ASTRO] Vynil vs. CD
.. begin astro-transmission
Woo Hoo! I finally bought a new turntable last night. I stayed up
late listening to my MOAM vynil, including lots of tracks I
had never heard before! I now know that the song they played live
that I didn't know the name of is "The Wayward Meteor" from the
"New Sounds of Tomorrow" 7". Interesting that some aspects of the
"new" MOAM sound go back that far. This track would fit in quite
nicely on "1000X".
As for the debate: "Why can't we all just get along?" There are things
to love and to hate about both formats. Any meaningful discussion of
the technical merits are fairly moot in the context of MOAM music, since
both formats are perfectly adequate for "rock" music. CD still wins
for me, just because I don't like Snap Crackle and Pop joining the
rythm section, plus it is a more compact and durable medium. The only
tragedy is that the canvas for the packaging artist is so much smaller
with CDs. For alot of you students and teens out there, the affordability
factor of the vynil format is pretty compelling, and we _all_ want those
bonus tracks and 7"-only tracks!
It is true, however, "Is it..." and "Destroy..." both sound BETTER on
LP than they do on CD. This is not due to superiority of the LP format,
but is actually due to the inferiority of the mastering job done on
those CDs. Sorry to Marrer or whomever is responsible, but it is true.
The CD versions are compressed and the EQ is all wrong. My only complaint
about early MOAM, particularly "Destroy..." has been the sound quality,
but I am pleased to find that the LPs sound quite nice. I'm going to
dub all of my MOAM vinyl onto DAT, and trust me that it will not suffer
any ill-effects from the digital DAT medium.
Digitally yours,
Mookie
