Good point. But which is better: giving a child a horribly mangled
dead puppy, or giving him no puppy at all?

Actually, I don't feel strongly about this subject at all. I just
wanted an excuse to use a grotesque metaphor.

Regarding re-doing music for old silent films, I think it is an interesting
idea. Just as you can turn down the color for a colorized film, you can
turn down the sound on a silent film that has new music you don't like.

If the project also involves re-editing or new footage, then I start getting
concerned. As long as it is clearly understood that it is a new work
based on the previous work, I think even re-cutting is ok, so long as the
original version is available as well.

Back in high school, they kept us busy for awhile one day by showing us
Chaplin's "The Gold Rush". One of the kids brought in his boom-box and
played the then-new ablum by The Cars. I don't recall for sure, but I
think it was their first album.
You would be surprized how well that music and that film worked together,
even without any attempt to do any creative sychnronization of their
content. I haven't seen this new-wave Metropolis, but I hold out some
hope that it might be interesting in a similar way.

I think Metropolis might be interesting with music similar to the
earliest works of Tangerine Dream which are now considered "ambient".
Maybe I'll try dubbing my own soundtrack, just for fun.

By the way, where can I get a copy of Metropolis with an original
score from the same time period?

Thanks,

Mookie
