I recall both Starcrunch and Dick Dale (in separate interviews) saying
that they use the thickest gage available.    

For those who thing this line of questioning is irrelevant, I assure you
that it _does_ make a difference in the sound.  Thicker strings just
give a "thicker", less "bright" or "tinny" sound. It also makes a difference
in how much abuse they will withstand before they break, which is
also an important consideration when playing in the classic Dick Dale
style, as Starcrunch often does.

>From the sound of things, I would guess that Trace is using a lighter 
strings than Starcrunch did.  He also has a different, less surfy and
more strummy/jangly playing style most of the time, which is how the
strings manage to not break through a whole show.
